By Balarabe Alkassim, Abuja with agency report
The Nigerian government has issued a flood warning that will likely affect 198 local governments in 31 out of the country’s 36 states, according to the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
Sputnik Africa reported that, residents of 198 local government areas across the states have been alerted to take precautions as rainfall became frequent in August.
Heavy rains and flooding are likely in the coming days, particularly in the southern region, including the economic capital, Lagos.
Nigeria’s emergency agency has put rescue teams and equipment on high alert, urging residents in high-risk flood areas to move to safety.
Last year, more than 5 million people in Nigeria were affected and over 1,200 died as a result of a series of floods that occurred across Nigeria. (Sputnik Africa)
