The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has moved to deepen ties between Japan and Nigeria as Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture was designated as Nigeria’s official “hometown” in Japan.

The move is part of a new initiative announced at the ongoing Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).

According to a State House press release on Wednesday, the hometown partnership is designed to strengthen cultural, technical, and developmental cooperation between Japan and Africa by pairing African nations with Japanese cities that share existing ties.

Alongside Nigeria’s designation, JICA assigned Tanzania to Nagai (Yamagata Prefecture), Ghana to Sanjo (Niigata Prefecture), and Mozambique to Imabari (Ehime Prefecture).

Kisarazu, a rapidly growing maritime and industrial hub near Tokyo, offers Nigeria strategic opportunities for technology transfer, maritime expertise, skills exchange, and industrial investment.

The partnership reinforces Nigeria’s central role in Africa’s growth story and Japan’s recognition of Nigeria’s youth-driven potential as a key driver of global development.

Nigerian embassy officials in Tokyo are scheduled to meet with the Mayor of Kisarazu and Japanese counterparts this week to operationalise the relationship, which is expected to support bilateral trade, innovation, and people-to-people connections.

The federal government views the partnership between the two countries as an important milestone in diversifying partnerships, creating economic opportunities, and expanding Nigeria’s global influence under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
