AfroMedia Condemns Attacks On Journalists On Gaza, Calls for Urgent UN Action
By Ahmed Kingimi, Maiduguri
AfroMedia, the African Initiative for Journalism and Media, has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing violence against journalists and civilians in Gaza, urging the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate action.
In a statement released Tuesday, AfroMedia criticized the Israeli military operations for targeting media professionals, accusing them of systematically silencing the truth and concealing violations against civilians. The organization highlighted reports from international bodies such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which document over 240 journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. Many others have been injured or detained, making Gaza one of the most perilous places in the world for journalists in the 21st century.
AfroMedia specifically named journalists including Anas Al-Sharif, Hossam Shabat, Ismail Abu Hatab, and Yahya Sobeih, stating their targeting is part of a calculated effort to suppress information and hide war crimes committed against civilians. The organization emphasized that such acts violate international laws, including the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and constitute war crimes that demand accountability.
The initiative called on the United Nations and global leaders to urgently condemn these attacks, launch investigations—potentially through the International Criminal Court—and ensure independent media access to Gaza. AfroMedia further urged the provision of protective measures for journalists operating in conflict zones, including logistical support and necessary equipment.
AfroMedia warned that the loss of so many media professionals not only represents a tragic human toll but also damages press freedom and the public’s right to information.
The organization stressed that the battle for Gaza extends beyond the battlefield into the realm of media, underscoring the importance of safeguarding free journalism.
AfroMedia emphasized that defending journalists is synonymous with defending truth and justice. It called on media and human rights organizations worldwide to unite their voices and exert pressure to halt the violence and protect media professionals in Gaza.
