The Plateau State Police Command says it has arrested suspects linked to some of the major attacks recorded in the state in the past month.
The Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, disclosed this on Wednesday after Governor Caleb Mutfwang summoned the State Security Council to review the deteriorating security situation in parts of the state.
Mr Faniyan, however, did not disclose the number of suspects arrested or the specific attacks linked to them, saying investigations were ongoing.
“We have some arrests; investigation is ongoing. We are not investigating in isolation. We are collaborating with all the other agencies up to the national level,” the commissioner said.
He said the police were also pursuing other suspects and using technology to support ongoing investigations.
“We are still going after some suspects, and we are doing a lot of technological analysis,” he said.
The disclosure comes after a series of attacks in parts of Plateau, including a recent deadly incident in Mangu Local Government Area.
Describing the Mangu attack as “very unfortunate”, Mr Faniyan said security agencies had prepared and deployed personnel but were unable to prevent the incident.
“The Mangu case was very unfortunate. We prepared and deployed, but somehow, such incidents still occurred,” he said.
According to him, the incident was one of the reasons Governor Mutfwang convened the security council meeting.
“That is part of why His Excellency called this meeting so that such must not happen again,” he said.
The meeting, held at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, was attended by the deputy governor, heads of security and law enforcement agencies, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, and other government officials.
Mr Faniyan said the council reviewed emerging security threats, recent attacks, intelligence gathering and sharing, preventive operations and collaboration among security agencies.
“Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is the Chief Security Officer of the state, and once in a while, we review the security situation,” he said.
“We assess the security situation in order to take steps to improve on what we already have.”
The commissioner urged residents to provide security agencies with credible and timely information about suspicious persons, movements and activities.
He also called for heightened vigilance as the ember months approach and political activities increase ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mr Faniyan said security agencies would continue to deploy intelligence-led and preventive measures to identify and neutralise threats before they escalate.
He said the agencies remained committed to sustaining Plateau’s reputation as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
