President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the pivotal role of faith leaders in fostering peace, reconciliation, and moral renewal across Nigeria, urging them to continue preaching tolerance and discouraging extremism.

The President made this known on Sunday at Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, during the opening ceremony of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu described religious leaders as “bridge-builders” whose influence is critical in shaping values and restoring trust among citizens in a deeply divided nation.

“The Catholic Church has been a credible partner in the journey towards national renewal.

“Your investments in education, health and social welfare often in remote and underserved communities speak louder than words.

“You have stood with the people in times of hardship, provided comfort in grief, and raised your voice against injustice and corruption,” Tinubu said.

He praised the Catholic bishops and other clerics across denominations for consistently promoting dialogue and interfaith harmony despite Nigeria’s diversity, stressing that genuine reconciliation and cohesion can only be achieved when religious leaders amplify messages of peace while condemning hatred and divisive tendencies.

On governance, the President assured the Bishops that his administration is addressing the root causes of insecurity and social unrest, including poverty, unemployment and inequality.

“He highlighted ongoing reforms such as fuel subsidy removal, unification of exchange rates, and plugging of financial leakages which, though painful in the short term, are aimed at stabilising the economy and laying a sustainable foundation for growth.

“These reforms are carefully structured to deliver enduring benefits, stimulate investments, create jobs and expand opportunities for young people.

“We recognisze that good governance is not just about growth, but also about justice, fairness, accountability and the dignity of every Nigerian,” Tinubu said.

He further assured that the federal government remains open to deepening collaboration with the Catholic Church and other faith-based organisations in education, healthcare, social welfare and youth empowerment.

Tinubu urged the bishops to complement government efforts by guiding communities with values of honesty, hard work, and compassion, while also partnering on civic education, environmental protection and moral formation for future generations.
