In a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery in rural areas in Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Rural Health Mission Nigeria, has renovated a primary health care (PHC) facility in Garin Gambo village of Nangere Local Government of Yobe State.
During the handover of the renovated health care centre, on Thursday, the chief executive officer of the organisation, Muhammad Sadiq Ahmad, noted that the facility had been non-functional for long and has now been transformed into a fully functional healthcare centre.
According to him, the NGO’s interventions aim to bridge the healthcare gap in rural areas, particularly for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in their targeted states of Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe and Taraba.
He added that the organisation’s impact extends beyond healthcare pointing out that in Nangere Local Government Area, they also trained 50 farmers on modern farming techniques and farm inputs to boost productivity.
“Additionally, 15 elderly individuals and persons with disabilities received unconditional cash support, while 50 pregnant women were given cash assistance and birth kits to ensure safe deliveries”, he stated.
Responding, the chairman of Nangere LGA, Samaila Musa, expressed gratitude to Rural Health Mission Nigeria for selecting the local government for this project.
He called on the Yobe State Primary Health Care Development Board to build on the progress made and requested a partnership to train more healthcare workers in critical areas.
Also, the District Head of the area, Ibrahim Usman, urged the community to take ownership of the facility and ensure its maintenance.
