It was a case of nostalgia when some members of the family of former President Shehu Shagari visited that of former President Muhammadu Buhari in his Kaduna residence on a condolence visit.
Former President Buhari died in a London hospital on 13th July, 2025.
The Shagari family was led by Captain Muhammad Bala Shagari (rtd), the Sarkin Mafaran Shagari. He sympathized with the Buhari family during this period of mourning.
Bello Bala Shagari, in a statement, reflected on the historical and personal ties between the two families, describing it as deeply rooted in Nigeria’s journey.
Bello Shagari said: “Today, I accompanied the head of our family, Capt. Muhammad Bala Shagari (Rtd.), Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, on a condolence visit to the family of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, on behalf of the entire Shagari family.
“Our two families are tied by a complex yet significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history. Beyond politics, the relationship between the Shagari and Buhari families has remained cordial, even before the passing of our respective patriarchs,” he pointed out.
Other members of the delegation included Alhaji Abubakar Cika Shagari, Ustaz Musa Samari, and Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Zaria and received by late President Buhari son, Yusuf.
Late President Shagari, who served from 1979 to December 31, 1983, was overthrown in a military coup led by then Major General Buhari, bringing an end to the Second Republic. Following the coup, Shagari was detained while Buhari assumed power as Head of State.
