Bill Gates Hails Gombe State For Health Reforms, Innovative Biometric System

By Muhammad Faruk Bayu, Gombe

Global philanthropist and Chairman of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, has praised Gombe State for its remarkable reforms in the health sector, describing the state’s efforts as inspiring and result oriented.

In a personal letter sent to the Gombe State government through the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency and the Chief Executive of Human Capital Managers Nigeria Limited, Gates commended the government’s innovative leadership and commitment to improving the lives of its people.

“I was impressed by Gombe’s problem-solving mindset and commitment to achieving results,” Gates wrote after a recent high-level meeting in Abuja.

He highlighted the state’s strong stakeholder engagement and strategic governance as the foundation of its progress in healthcare delivery.

One of the innovations that caught his attention was the Human Resource for Health (HRH) biometric attendance platform, a homegrown digital system introduced in Gombe to monitor staff attendance and ensure better use of health resources. Gates described it as a compelling example of a state led initiative that uses real time data to improve decision making and efficiency.

“The HRH biometric attendance platform is a compelling example of a state led initiative to improve data availability for decision making to optimise your resources,” the philanthropist noted.

He also appreciated the detailed demonstration presented by the Gombe health team during the Abuja meeting, praising the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for driving transparency and innovation in the sector.

This recognition, coming from one of the world’s leading voices in global health, affirms Gombe State’s commitment to advancing Universal Health Coverage and providing equitable access to quality care.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya has repeatedly emphasised that his administration will continue to strengthen partnerships with both local and international organisations, including UNICEF, WHO, and the Gates Foundation, to sustain progress in healthcare reforms and improve the well being of citizens.
