The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to commence continuous voter registration exercise in Sokoto ahead of the 2027 general election.

Addressing newsmen Thursday at the Sokoto State Secretariat of INEC, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Umar Yusuf Garba, flanked by other principal officers of he commission, said the online preregistration began on 18th of August, adding that the physical registration will follow from 25th August 2025.

While noting that the pre-online registration started on Monday 18th August, 2025 through the official portal of the commission, he said, “This platform allows eligible citizens to begin their registration process online before completing biometric at designated INEC local government offices in the state and state offices”.

Continuing, the REC Umar Yusuf listed those to be registered as citizens who have attained the age of 18 years or above who have never registered before and those who had registered but whose names or details are not in the biometric Register of Voters

Yusuf further listed others to include, those who have any issue of failed verification or PVC, fingerprints or facial authentication as well as voters who wish to transfer their voting locations as well as replacement of lost, damaged or defaced Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and correction of personal details on the voters register.

“INEC strongly emphasised that those who already have valid PVCs should not register again, as multiple registration is illegal and punishable under the law,” the REC noted.
