The Taraba State Police Command has vowed to track and prosecute the vigilante group that ambushed and killed one of its officer, last week Saturday.
The slain officer, an assistant superintendent of police, with force number AP/NO191462, was killed in an ambush in Sandirde village of Gassol local government council of the state.
In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday morning in Jalingo, the state capital, the Police Commissioner, David Iloyanomon, said the ambush was led by the leader of the vigilante group, identified as Ali Dissol.
According to him, “On 4/5/2024, a team of special strike force operatives attached to Government House Taraba State led by SP Jamu Emmanuel, while on routine patrol at Sandirde village in Gassol local government council were ambushed by a group of local vigilante.”
He said the vigilante group shot the officer on his lap, a situation that led to his demise in a hospital situated in the village.
“The unprovoked criminal act of the gruesome murder of the officer was despicable and unwarranted, hence the command has deployed intelligence and operational resources to sustain manhunt of the fleeing attackers and bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to book,” he vowed.
Extending the Command’s condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officer, he reassured the people that have no stone will be left unturned in combating criminality in the entire axis of the state.
The incident comes a few weeks after the killing of a third class traditional ruler in Gassol local government area of the state by a suspected vigilante group.
