House helps docked for allegedly stealing properties, money

Two house helps, Valentina Ayuba and Blessing Simon, were on Monday docked in an Upper Area Court, Karu, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a handbag, laptop and money, all worth N3.45 million.

The police charged Ayuba, 20, and Simon, 20, with criminal conspiracy and theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that on Jan. 31, the complainant employed the defendants as her house helps but instead they conspired together and stole her bvulgari handbag, valued at N1.85 million, laptop valued at N400,000 and her children’s piggy bank containing the sum of N200,000, all worth N3.45million.

The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 97 and 289 of the Penal Code.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Judge, Malam Hassan Mohammed, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N2 million and two sureties each.

Mohammed ordered the sureties to submit verifiable means of identification, residential address with the court and police, their account details which will be be attached to the bail bond.

He ordered the defendants to deposit the sum of N250,000 as part of the bail condition.

The Judge adjourned the case until March 20, for further hearing.
