Zango LG Adopts Year-Round Farming to Combat Hardship
By Joe Goddy, Katsina
In a proactive move to address the prevailing economic hardship and food scarcity, the Zango Local Government Area of Katsina State has adopted an 11-month farming cycle.
The Chairman of the council, Hon. Ahmed Babangida, disclosed this in an interview, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s agricultural enhancement policies aimed at mitigating the economic difficulties faced by citizens.
According to Babangida, the local government has distributed over two million improved seedlings, solar water pumps, and fertilizers at a 35 per cent subsidized rate to encourage farming, adding that power tiller machines have been provided to enhance mechanized agriculture across the region.
To ensure farmers adopt modern farming techniques, extension workers have been equipped with motorcycles and logistics support, allowing them to guide and educate farmers on improved agricultural practices.
Beyond farming, the council has also introduced empowerment programs for women and youth, providing them with goats and N20,000 to support small-scale trade and livestock businesses.
In a bid to enhance security and protect farmers, the council has banned open grazing, deploying three vehicles and ten motorcycles for security patrols. This move is also aimed at eliminating drug-related activities and other crimes in the area.
Furthermore, the council has prioritized education by engaging 100 teachers, providing them with stipends to support the teaching of students in local schools.
Hon. Babagida expressed gratitude to Governor Radda for his support, particularly in establishing the Community Development Committee (CDC) and approving funds which aims to accelerate rural development.
He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the governor’s vision to transform the state.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen food security, economic stability, and rural development in Katsina State.
