A Magistrate Court in Wuse, Zone 6, Abuja has found a member of the House of Representatives, Victor Mela, guilty of lying under oath while filing the CD001 INEC form prior to the 2019 elections.
The lawmaker, who represents Billiri/Balanga federal constituency of Gombe State, was convicted following prosecution by the FCT Police.
The presiding judge, Ibrahim Mohammed, has however, set a different date for the sentence of the lawmaker after his lawyer pleaded for leniency.
Speaking to Daylight Reporters, the counsel to the norminal complaint, Barrister Chijioke Kanu, said it is an offence under section 1611 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to sworn an oath in contrary.
Barrister Kanu explained that the lawmaker who is a citizen of Nigeria and Canada, while filling an INEC form prior to the 2019 election lied that he didn’t acquire Canadian citizenship voluntarily, which is against the law of the land.
While speaking, Barrister Kanu explained further that the lawmaker at a time published to have gotten having dual citizen of Nigeria and Canada. Meanwhile, lying on oath is a case of perjury.
