University Of Abuja Now Yakubu Gowon University – FEC
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has renamed the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, made this known after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting Monday preceded over by President Bola Tinubu.
Addressing State House correspondents, the Minister said the move was aimed at honouring the former Head of state and elder Statesman, Yakubu Gowon.
The Minister also said the decision “will go through the National Assembly, but FEC has taken that decision”.
Gowon is Nigeria’s former Head of State who ruled the country from 1966 to 1975.
Idris stated that FEC will be on recess from 18 December, 2024 until 6 January 2025.
