A delegation representing UN organizations, including UNOCHA, IOM, and UNHCR, yesterday paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at promising to support Internally Displaced Persons.
Leader of the delegation Mr. William S. Chemaly, Senior Adviser on Solutions and Internal Displacement informed the Governor that they are touring the North East for on-the-spot assessments of the IDP situation with the aim of providing them with basic amenities to alleviate their suffering.
He stated that the United Nations is fully aware of the deplorable living conditions that people find themselves in, emphasizing the need to extend a helping hand to protect their dignity stressing that they are collaborating with state governments to identify areas for intervention.
Governor Fintiri expressed his appreciation for their gesture and urged them to do more, particularly in providing shelter.
He emphasized that at present, there are no indigenous Adamawa people living in IDP camps, as most have returned to their homes but still face dire living conditions.
He pointed out that the people in IDP camps in Adamawa are primarily from Yobe and Borno, who have sought refuge in the state. He called on the UNITED NATIONS to increase their assistance to IDPs living in their homes without means of livelihood.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Prof Kaletapwa Farauta and Chief of Staff Dr. Edgar Amos.
