An Area Court sitting in Jos on Tuesday sentenced a 19-year-old tailor, Kelvin Emmanuel, to a month confinement in a correctional centre for nicking N7000 from a shop.
A panel of two magistrates, Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan, who sentenced Emmanuel after he pleaded guilty, however, gave him an option of N5,000 fine.
They also ordered the convict to pay N10,000 to the shop owner as compensation.
They said the judgment would serve as deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal act.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported on Dec. 20, 2022 at the Anglo-Jos Police Station by the complainant, Luka Daniel of Mai Adiko.
The prosecutor said that the convict went to the shop, nicked the N7000 and ran away but was later apprehended some days later.
The prosecutor said the offence was punishable under Section 273 of the Plateau Penal Code law.
