The deputy governor of Kaduna state, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, says sporting activities are a top priority of the state government in view of its accruing health and economic benefits.
Balarabe made the disclosure at the closing ceremony of the Southern Kaduna soccer and marathon race championships in Kafanchan.
The championships, designed to promote peace in the area, were organized by the Kafanchan Municipal Authority. They involved participants from the eight local government areas that make up Southern Kaduna.
Represented by Mr Idris Nyam, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Balarabe said the events were in line with the state government’s policy of promoting peace and unity through sports.
According to her, the competition will in no small measure bring about the desired harmony needed for accelerated development of the area.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of Zango Kataf Local Government, Mr Francis Sani, and the Sole Administrator of Jaba Local Government, Mrs Nita George, both lauded the participants for demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship.
They said the singular act had paved the way for the attainment of the intended objectives of the event.
Speaking earlier, the Administrator, Kafanchan Municipal Authority, Mrs Phoebe Yayi, said peace is necessary for development to thrive, hence the move by the Authority to engage the youths in sporting activities that serve as a unifying factor.
She described the successful completion of the events as a proof that the people of the area are peace loving.
NAN reports that the month-long championship featured soccer and marathon races for men, women and people living with disabilities.
Zangon Kataf Local Government Area won the football trophy after beating Jaba Local Government Area by a lone goal.
In the 15-kilometre marathon race, Dominic Patrick came first in the men’s category while Dinatu Yohanna came first in the women’s category.
For people living with disabilities, Bulus Ajiyet came first in the men’s category while Hannatu Pius won the women’s event.
