Speaker Abbas Laments Kebbi, Niger Floods, Symphatises With The States

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has lamented the losses of lives and property to the recent floods in Kebbi and Niger States.Speaker Abbas in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi on Friday, described the incidents as unfortunate.
It could be recalled that, the Kebbi State Government had said no fewer than 29 persons, 321,000 houses, and 858,000 farmlands had been lost to floodwaters in 16 of the 21 local government areas of the state.The State’s Commissioner for Information, Yakubu Ahmed, had warned that rice, maize guinea corn, and other crops were destroyed by the flood, and the state and Nigeria at large might suffer food shortage.
Similarly, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency has also said that, apart from rainfall, flooding and the attendant disaster were caused by the overflow of the various dams in the state and the blocking of waterways with refuse.
The Speaker, who said the recent devastating floods across the country were partly raised by climate change, lamented that the impacts were becoming too much to bear.“The losses to floods across the country this year are alarming. They are painful. I sympathise with the victims. My heart is with them,” he said.
The Speaker extended his sympathy to the people and the governments of Kebbi and Niger States while praying for comfort for the victims.
