An Upper Area Court, Gwagwalada, Abuja, has sentenced a 31-year-old scavenger, Nura Hamisu, to one month imprisonment for stealing 11mm iron rods worth N180,000.
Hamisu, a resident of Bassa Village, Abuja, was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of breaking in and stealing.
He, however, begged the court for leniency, promising never to engage in crime again.
The Judge, Abdulkarim Abdullahi, gave the scavenger N7,000 fine option.
Abdullahi said that the court considered that the scavenger had shown remorse for his actions.
The judge ordered that the recovered iron rods should be handed over to the complainant.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Abdullahi Tanko, told the court that the complainant, Mr Hamisu Mohammed of FCDA Quarters, Garki, Abuja, reported the case at Airport Police Station, on Jan. 8.
Tanko said that the convict broke into at a site belonging to the complainant and stole the iron rods.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
