Reps Urge IGP, COAS, Others To Address Relentless Attacks By Bandits In Tafa, Other Parts Of Niger State
The House of Representatives has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief Of Army Staff (COAS), the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to strengthen security in Tafa local government and other parts of Niger State being ceaseless attacked by bandits.
The call followed the adoption of a motion on notice moved by Adamu Tanko (PDP, Niger) at the Plenary on Tuesday which was seconded by and it was seconded by Jonathan Gaza Gbwefi (SDP, Nasarawa).
Leading the debate, Rep. Tanko stated that many communities in Niger State have been facing unrelenting attacks by bandits.
He said that many communities in the Local Government have been facing attacks with many killed and kidnapped.
He said, “Tthe recent one happened on Friday, the 27th October in Ijah Gbagyi community in Niger State, where Seventeen persons were kidnapped by armed men suspected to armed bandits with three persons shot, with two sustaining serious degree of injuries, and one died immediately and another vigilante was shot in Gyedna community, Garam ward”.
Accorsing to him, the armed men have since taken their deadly attacks to communities such as “Kuchiko-Bwari” community located in New Bwari ward close to the Nigeria Law school Bwari, Abuja, where kidnapping is on a frequent basis, leaving residents in perpetual fear.
He informed that, Tafa Local Government is home to a good number of civil servants who work in the Federal Capital Terrority(FCT).
He however lamented that, bandits attacks, armed robbery, insurgency in Tafa Local Government council of Niger State have continued unabated, and many women, children, families and their loved ones have suffered to pay ransoms in return for their loved ones.
He added, “The rising cases of insecurity in Tafa Local Government council has assumed an uncontrollable dimensions with people in the area can no longer go about their lawful duties without fear of being killed, kidnapped, attack, or raped.
“Residents no longer go to their farms which is their economy mainstay, and all farming activities have been grounded with a likelihood of severe hunger in the Local Government in the year 2024”.
Rep.Tanko said, increasing security in Tafa Local Government council will help in fighting crime and criminality in the area;
He added that establishing a military base and Police Mobile Force within Tafa Local Government will reduce crime and criminality in the area.
The motion was voted on, adopted and referred to the House committee on Police, Defense as well as that on Humanitarian Affairs.
