An islamic group’Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a Wa’ Ikamatus Sunnah’ (JIBWIS) has appealed to the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconcile forthwith in order to end the current strike embarked by lecturers and allow students to resume to classes especially now that COVID 19 lockdown is over.
Deputy national president of the group Sheikh Sa’idu Hassan Jingir made the appeal yesterday in an interview with newsmen in Bauchi during his visit to the new eid mosque built for the group by the state governor Bala Mohammed.
According to him, if the dou cannot resolve the pending issues amicably or reach an agreement acceptable by all, they should involve religious and traditional leaders to intercede between them.
Jingir opined that clerics and traditional rulers are influential personalities capable of reconciling the federal government with ASUU, hence it is necessary to involve them in the dialogue.
The religious leader asserted that university lecturers contribute immensely to the development of the country calling on the government to prioritize their welfare.
He however charged the academics to be considerate on the current economic predicament faced by the nation and make demands the government can provide.
The preacher also cautioned the lecturers to eschew favoritism on tribal or regional basis while awarding marks to students, bribery and sexual harrassment describing them as ungodly acts.
He lauded the federal government for the recent education policy that increased the retirement age of teachers to 40 years. This is even as he advocated more incentives to teachers and lecturers.
