The Nigerian Red Cross, Bauchi Office, has called for support from the Bauchi State Government and general public on disaster management and risk reduction in the state.
Mr Hassan Yahaya, Disaster Management Officer, Red Cross, Bauchi Office, in an intensive interview spoke with newsmen on Saturday on the 2023 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in the state.
He explained that on Oct. 13 of every year, the global community celebrated the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
“That gives opportunity to acknowledge the progress being made toward reducing disaster, risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health, while reminding the world that disaster risk is man-made.’’
He said that Oct. 13(Friday) was a short day; hence the decision to mark the event on Saturday by clearing drainages, refuse and removing grasses that covered roads.
The disaster management officer urged the government, individuals, private agencies, NGOs and the media to support the Red Cross in its mission of disaster management and risk reduction.
He said that disasters often struck without warning and response was often minimal without government Support.
“That is we are seeking all the support to strengthen our responses during disasters and our auxiliary role in responding quickly to disaster and to equally alleviate the situation of the vulnerable people which include those affected by disaster.
“To attend to those affected by epidemics, armed conflicts, as well as the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas amongst whom are women, children, aged, displaced and other vulnerable people,” he said.
