The Bauchi Police Command has confirmed the detention of Police Constable (PC) Lukman Madaki in connection with the killing of two people and injuring another in Bauchi on Thursday.
Mr Umar Sanda, the Commissioner of Police (CP), confirmed this in a statement issued by the Command’s Spokesman SP Ahmed Wakil on Friday.
The CP said the suspect had since been arrested and detained while investigation has begun in earnest.
“On 24/03/2022 at about 2230hrs, a Patrol team attached to E’ Division while on visibility patrol around a black spot at Rafin zurfi, Yelwa arrested F/no. 519342 PC Lukman Madaki, 29, of the Toro Division attached to the Sports Office, Bauchi State Police Command Headquarters.
“In a bid to resist arrest, PC Lukman employed the use of a Jack knife, stabbed and injured the following members of the Peace and Security committee attached to the patrol team.
“The victims are Abdulmalik Mohammed, 22, of Sabon Gida Yelwa, Sadiq, 23, of Sabon Gida Yelwa and Nazifi Mohammed, 19, of Yelwan Labourer,” he said.
According to him, the victims were rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi for treatment where Abdulmalik Mohammed and Sadiq were certified dead by a medical doctor.
He said that Nazifi Mohammed, the third victim, was currently responding to treatment.
The statement said CP Sanda commiserated with the families of the deceased, and the people of Bauchi state on the unfortunate incident.
It said he had ordered a full scale investigation into the matter and appealed for calm.
He urged members of the public not to take laws into their hands as the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
He also enjoined citizens of the state to remain law-abiding and to continue assisting the police to fight crime in the state by promptly reporting any incident.
The CP assured the public of his commitment in the fight against criminality in accordance with the law of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that youths gathered in front of the Divisional headquarters burning tyres as well as used drums and water tanks to block the Bauchi – Dass road.
The youths demanded the release of the alleged killer cop to them, trying to force their way into the station, a move that was resisted by the Policemen on duty.
