An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a 20-year-old unemployed man, Adekoya Lawal, for alleged breach of peace and membership of a secret society.
The Magistrate, Mrs M. C. Ayinde, did not take the defendant ‘s plea but ordered that he should be kept at the Kirikiri custodial facility pending advice of the state director of public prosecutions.
Ayinde adjourned the case until Aug. 23 for mention,
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Segun Oke, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 6 at Abijo/Sangotedo, Eti Osa, Lagos State.
He alleged that police detectives, who acted on credible information, swooped on a gang of secret cult members as they were smoking hemp.
According to him, the defendant and his accomplices, now at large, are notorious for terrorising the neighbourhood and displaying firearms.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant confessed to belonging to a secret society called Eiye Confraternity.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 2 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)
