Rep. Simon Mwatkon (PDP), representing Ryom Barkin Ladi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has given free medical and surgical treatments to 4,000 members of his constituency.
Speaking at the end of the exercise on Saturday, Mwatkon said the gesture was to support the common man and offer his constituents reprieve from some medical expenses.
Represented by his Media Aide, Mr Friday Bako, the lawmaker said tghe gesture was for some rural dwellers who did not have money for medical treatment.
He also acknowledged that the current security challenges in the constituency had exposed the people to different health risks.
“’My people have gone through tough times, they have been traumatised, they need help.
“This initiative is to help those who are sick, but do not have money to visit the hospital,” he said.
“As a caring representative, I chose to show my people that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” Mwatkon said.
A member of the medical team, Dr Chomo Datiyi, said that the exercise brought together personnel from different areas of expertise.
Datiyi, who described the exercise as `successful’, however said “our only challenge was handling the large crowd”
An eye specialist, Dr Elisha Tenmang said that the exercise had provided succour to many who had sight challenges.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Alex Mundiyal thanked the lawnmaker for the gesture.
“We are happy to benefit from this good gesture from our representative, we thank him for doing so much,” he said.
Another beneficiary, Mrs Veronica Dogos, described the free treatment as ‘very timely’.
“My son and I were treated for malaria, we appreciate this kind gesture. May God bless the giver,” Dogos said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the exercise took place simultaneously in Riyom and Barkin Ladi.
NAN further reports that surgeries were performed on constituents who had hernia, hydrocele, lipoma, ganglion and lumps.
Free treatments were also given to those suffering from Diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and malaria.
The exercise further featured free eye tests, treatments, blood pressure checks, sugar level tests and donation of eye glasses
