Youth leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has condemned in strong terms State of Emergency declared in Rivers by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as unconstitutional.
The group noted that the declaration not only violates the principles of democracy but also represents a troubling attempt to undermine the authority of a state governed by the PDP.
According to them, the move is “an orchestrated effort to dismantle the democratic structures that our party tirelessly establishes and maintains”.
In a statement signed by Jamilu Ali Kalshingi, Gombe state chairman and Brown Odeh, Cross Rivers State secretary the group said, “We recognise that the imposition of such a state of emergency is not just a localised issue but a threat to the foundational principles of governance across Nigeria.
“By attempting to transition Nigeria into a one-party system, the President plays a perilous game that endangers the political pluralism essential for the healthy functioning of our democracy.
“We call upon all citizens and democratic institutions to join us in resisting this undemocratic maneuver and to safeguard the integrity of our electoral processes.
The youth urged the National Assembly (NASS) members in both the red and green chambers to reflect on the weight of their responsibilities at this critical juncture in the nation’s history.
“It is vital that they rise to the occasion and embody the role of accountable leaders who advocate for the interests of Nigerians, particularly the youth who often find themselves marginalised in political discourse.
“We remind them that their mandate is not only to critique the governing party but to actively engage in policy-making that reflects the hopes and aspirations of their constituents.
“They must serve as a check on the government, ensuring that it remains accountable and transparent.
“The youth of Nigeria watch closely and expect their representatives to champion th course of their rights and advocate for their future.
“We caution against complacency or acquiescence to governmental overreach, which could result in being labeled as mere puppets of the presidency.
As for the leadership and key stakeholders of the PDP, particularly the NWC, Board of Trustees and the PDP Governors Forum, the group urged them to take decisive action in restoring the dignity, respect, and core principles that have historically defined the PDP.
“The party symbolises hope for millions of Nigerians, and it is crucial that we uphold our values amid these trying times.
“The recent judgment by the apex court regarding the position of the Secretary requires not only celebration and commendation of the judiciary, but also immediate implementation of the ruling by party taking charge of its affairs.
“Therefore, we strongly advocate for the immediate official swearing-in of Hon. Sunday Enemchukwu Okoye as the party Secretary. whose endorsement by almost all organs and pillars of the party is crucial in restoring confidence among party members and the electorate, while ensuring that we present a united front as we navigate the challenges ahead.
Concluding, they group said, “As the youth, who constitute 60% of Nigeria’s population and the backbone of our party’s activities, we express our growing frustration with the current state of affairs within the PDP, especially regarding the ratification of the President’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State that passes without any difficulties or resistance from our members, even at advantages of more than one-third in both chambers,
“We increasingly feel disillusioned by the internal conflicts and external threats that leave us vulnerable. The youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; we are the stakeholders of today, and our voices must be heard and valued.
“We can no longer afford to gamble with the future of our generation. Our patience wears thin, and we demand immediate and decisive action from our leadership to address these pressing issues.
“Together, let us fortify our party, uphold our democratic principles, and work towards a brighter future for Nigeria that reflects our shared dreams and aspirations.”
