PDP Condemns Gombe Government’s Misplaced Priority Amidst Widespread Poverty

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has called on the Gombe State Government to urgently reassess its priorities and align its initiatives with the genuine needs of the people.
The call is coming at the heels of profound
concern regarding the state government’s recent decision to allocate over N31billion for the construction of an underpass and several kilometers of road network in the state capital.
The government’s announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Works, Usman Kallamu Maijama’a.
In a statement Thursday by the Gombe State PDP Public Relations Officer, Abdulkadir Ahmad Dukku, the party said the government’s decision comes at a critical juncture when the people of the state are confronting severe economic challenges, including pervasive poverty, a struggling education system, and a healthcare sector in crisis.
According to the statement, while the government asserts that the infrastructural project is essential for enhancing accessibility and managing future traffic demands, the PDP questions whether this truly aligns with the urgent needs of the citizens.
It stated that communities are striving to secure basic necessities, and instead of addressing these pressing issues, the government seems to prioritize projects that serve the interests of a privileged few.
The PDP noted that moreover, the government’s approach raises significant concerns even as civil servants have been misled with hollow promises of minimum wage increases that fail to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
The party also pointed out that indigenous contractors are being sidelined, while a select group of individuals, acting as fronts for government officials, are favored for contracts.
“Tragically, the administration has
transformed our diligent youth into political pawns, undermining their potential
contributions to society.
“Similarly, the civil service has been compromised by favoritism and a blatant disregard for established regulations, leading to a profound erosion of public trust,” the statement said.
The statement affirmed that the PDP firmly condemns this troubling departure from effective governance and focus on extravagant infrastructure projects must not overshadow the urgent need to alleviate poverty and restore the education system.
The PDP said it is dedicated to advocating for policies that reflect the will and welfare of Gombe citizens, especially as the days of this administration are numbered.
It said the actions of the administration are not only incomprehensible but also deeply alarming in their implications for the society and urged m citizens to remain vigilant and demand accountability from this administration.
“It is time for a government that prioritizes the needs of its people over self-serving projects designed to siphon public funds. Together, let us advocate for a brighter, more equitable future for Gombe State,” the PDP said.
