The NIgeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Katsina State has arrested a 27-year-old man (name withheld) for alleged electricity facility vandalism in the state.
The spokesman of the Corps, DSC Mohammed Tukur-Abdara said this while parading the suspect on Thursday in Katsina.
He said the suspect was arrested for allegedly vandalising high-tension electricity transmission pole at Ganga-Gari village in Daura Local Government Area of the state
He said the suspect, who hailed from Yarkuka ward of Daura, was arrested by community members of Ganga-Gari village while vandalising the high tension electricity transmission pole.
“During the arrest, the suspect, was found in possession of four pieces of angle iron, four pieces of bolts and nuts, five washers, one hammer, and one screwdriver,” he said.
“The suspect, who claimed to be a scavenger, claimed to be searching for scraps in the forest near Ganga-Gari village, when he noticed that some of the items were loose, and he decided to remove them to sell,” the spokesman said.
He said the community members arrested the suspect, and handed him over togerher with the exhibits to the Daura Divisional Office of the Corps.
According to him, investigation has been concluded, adding that the suspect would soon be charged to court.
Meanwhile, the NSCDC said it had handed over an exhibit (armored cable) recovered on Dec. 9, 2022 to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), in compliance to a court order received dated Feb. 15, 2023.
“The handing over of the exhibit is to enable KEDCO to restore light to the people of Tudun Matawalle, who were thrown into darkness due to the vandalisation of their transformer.” Tukur-Abdara said.
He also quoted the Commandant of the Corps, Jamilu Indabawa as reiterating commitment to fight crimes in the state.
The Commandant warned criminal elements to stop their nefarious activities, stressing that the Corps would not relent in the protection of critical national assets.
Indabawa cautioned scavengers and metal scrap dealers to be mindful in their dealings to guard against falling victims to nefarious activities.
“To the general public, you should assist the Corps and other security agencies with credible information on suspicious groups or movements for prompt response”.
