The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), says it plans to partner with the National Information Technology Development Agency(NITDA) to ensure global visibility for Nigerian companies towards attaining a digital economy.
NiRA President, Mr Muhammed Rudman said this while paying a courtesy visit on NITDA Director-General Mr Kashifu Inuwa in Abuja on Thursday.
Rudman said that the visit was also to solicit for the agency’s support on building strong internet systems in Nigeria.
He said that the association has been contributing towards attaining digital economy in Nigeria by offering free .com.ng domain name to newly registered companies through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
“We are seeking for NITDA’s assistance for the CAC/NIRA Integration platform.
“This will translate to automation of the system such that someone registering a company with CAC will have the option of taking a .com.ng domain name.
“The initiative will give global visibility to Nigerian companies by giving them an opportunity to have web presence,” he said.
He also disclosed that the association was trying to domesticate the internet with the objective of hosting websites locally with resultant effect of increasing internet speed and reduction in the cost of data.
Inuwa, while addressing the visitors,said it was important for the agency and the association to be strategic partners to make impact in the Information and Communication Technology ector.
He urged NiRA to be more innovative and improve on its activities and collaboration with NITDA.
“You should not only be reporting to NITDA but also align your activities to various NITDA’s initiatives because thecgovernment and private sector needs each other.
“The role of government is to create an enabling environment for you to succeed and your part is to tell the government what it is you need to succeed.
“As registrars, you need to know who owns the company you are registering and you need to come up with a Know Your Customer (KYC) policy in other to assist yourselves and the security agencies in case of eventualities,” he said.
