The renowned advocate of non-kinetic approach to tackling insecurity in Nigeria and scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has expressed profound concern over Nigerian authorities’ persistent lack of interest in ending the insecurity devastating the country.
Gumi was speaking last weekend in Maiduguri as a guest discussant at an international symposium on Peace Building organised by Kalthum Foundation For Peace Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism And Terrorism.
Gumi reprimabded the authorities for turning deaf ears to advices on combating the country’s raging security crisis, maintaining that the authorities have shown no interest in finding solutions to the persistent crisis.
Gumi maintained that for the country to achieve lasting peace and security as well as check the rising spate of of recruitment into crimes and terrorism, the leadership must uphold justice to everyone across all levels of the society, accountability in the management of public funds and adopt non-kenetic approach in managing the security crisis.
Other speakers at the symposium including Prof Umar Ibrahim of University of Maiduguri, the Borno CAN Chairman, Mohammed Nada, representatives of Gov Babagana Umara Zulum, the army and the DSS concurred with Gumi on non-kinetic approach to tackling insecurity, positing that the use of arms cannot end terrorism or crimes associated with banditry and kidnappings.
While in Maiduguri, Sheikh Gumi visited the El-Kanemi College of Islamic Theology where he interacted with over 200 pupils orphaned by Boko Haram at a special center contributed by the founder of the College, Dr Areef Zaberdeen.
Gumi praised the Director of the College, Dr Muhammad Sani, for his commitment and sacrifice in building the College to its status and his interest in providing quality education to the orphans.
