Nigerian Army Holds Media Chat To Foster Stronger Civil-Military Relationship

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. GU Chibuisi, has highlighted the importance of fostering a strong relationship between the military and civilians.
He made the remarks at a strategic media chat on Civil-Military Cooperation in Gombe, on March 25, 2025.
Themed “Harnessing Whole-of-Society Approach to Enhance Information Management: National Security in Perspective”, the event aimed at strengthening collaboration between the military and the public through effective information management.
He emphasized that this was the first-quarter meeting designed to enhance mutual trust and cooperation.
Delivering a goodwill message, Gombe State Commissioner for Information, Mijinyawa Muhammad Tilde, described the event as timely, given the country’s pressing security concerns.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to implementing protective measures to address security challenges while underscoring the media’s crucial role in combating misinformation and promoting accurate reportage.
In his keynote address, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede represented by Maj. Gen. Ojo Ojunwa, stressed the vital role of responsible information dissemination in maintaining national security.
He called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media, urging journalists to practice balanced reporting that fosters national unity.
He also appealed to Nigerian citizens to support the military in achieving its constitutional mandate.
The Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ali Muhammed Ali noted that national security could not be achieved solely through kinetic military operations but required effective media engagement.
He expressed optimism that the event would yield positive outcomes in fostering a stronger relationship between the army and the press.
Ali also encouraged the Nigerian Army to simplify access to information for journalists to enhance accurate reporting.
During his presentation on the Nigerian Army’s Activities, Lt. Col. Sani emphasized that the army employs both kinetic (combat) and non-kinetic (non-combat) strategies, including humanitarian efforts, in its operations to maintain peace and stability.
The event featured a panel discussion on the relationship between the military and the media in ensuring national security.
Participants, including security experts and media practitioners, shared insights on strengthening their respective responsibilities.
Several dignitaries at the event called for the creation of an enabling environment where both parties could work together toward tackling security challenges, recognizing that national peace and development require collective efforts.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from both the Nigerian Army and the media to enhance collaboration in promoting security and stability across the country.
