A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Gombe state known as ‘Centre for Grassroots Community Education and Development’ has sensitized people in a fulani community called Wuro Gare in Akko local government area of the state on the need to ensure that their children go to school regularly.
The NGO conducted the sensitization when they paid a visit to Wuro Gare primary school in the village.
Programme manager of the NGO Idris Abubakar while addressing the teachers, pupils and some parents during the event lamented that there was low level of children enrollment in school in the area adding that even those who were sent to the school do not attend classes regularly.
He further revealed that in some of the classes, he found not more than 15 pupils calling on the parents not to send their children on errand or assign them with works during school hours in order not to disrupt their studies.
“Parents should compel the children to go to school every school days. They should not engage them in other activities during school time. In this school, some pupils are not regular. This can affect learning negatively”. He stated.
According to him, the organization was established with the objective of promoting education and children enrollment in schools especially in the rural areas that still lag behind in terms of acquisition of education.
The NGO during the event donated scheme of work and register books to the school to enable them assess pupils’ attendance in classes.
Responding, the headmaster of the school Alheri Thomas expressed appreciation to the NGO for the visit and sensitization saying it would help to encourage regular attendance among pupils.
She appealed to government to continue to provide the school with facilities to make it conducive for teaching and learning.
