NERC Hands Over Regulatory Powers To Edo Commission
By Osehobo Ofure, Benin City
The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has transferred its regulatory powers in Edo state to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ESERC).
Edo State Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources, Dr. Washington Osifo, announced this at the Ministry’s premises in Benin City.
He said the transition reflects Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to reliable and affordable electricity for Edo residents.
According to him, “the move aligns with the federal government’s decentralization policy approved in March 2023”, noting that Edo State now controls its electricity governance and decision-making.
Before the transition, Usifo said Edo and other South-South states faced serious power generation challenges, which he assured would now be addressed.
Dr. Osifo added that the state began implementing the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act on August 21, 2024.
He said, “The transition would improve power supply, attract private sector investment, create jobs, and boost economic growth”.
An Investor Mr. Odion Omonfoman of Hampshire Capital Ltd. who congratulated Governor Okpebholo on his first 100 days in office, expressed excitement about the transition and pledged collaboration with ESERC and the Ministry.
Also speaking, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, CEO of Etin Power Ltd., represented by Executive Assistant Ifeoma Okwolise, described the event as a major step toward efficient power generation.
