The deployment of military teams to maintain law and order in Kubau Local Government of Kaduna State has reduced armed robbery and banditry in the area, Alhaji Sabo-Aminu Anchau, its chairman, has said.
Sabo-Aminu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Anchau that the improving security situation had enhanced farming and business activities in the area.
“The security situation has improved in the local government. Armed robbery and kidnappings have all gone down due to the presence of the military in Yardoka, Garin-Banki, Anchau and other strategic locations within Kubau Local Government,” he said.
He added that the council was supporting the military and other security outfits within the local government to secure life and property of the citizens.
The local government boss said that many roads had been rehabilitated to boost the economy and enhance agricultural programmes, noting that the inhabitants of Kubau were mostly farmers requiring access roads to move farm produce to the markets.
He said that most of the projects were handled via direct labour to ward off issues that usually arise from the award of c0ntracts.
“We already have two court cases over road contracts that were abandoned. Previous administrations awarded numerous contracts for road constructions and could not complete them.
“The angry contractors have gone to court and it has not been easy for us.
“To avoid this, the local government has procured heavy equipment such as payloader machine, grader and three trucks for the execution of direct labour, especially in the rural areas.
“With this initiative, we have constructed over 55km of road network across the local government.
“We have worked on the township roads in Anchau; we have also rehabilitated Gidan-Gata to Kanwa road, Kurpi to Kudimi road, Pegi to Haskiya road and Damau to DanHauya road, among others,’’ he said.
According to him, the construction and rehabilitation of roads have eased the cost of transporting farm produce to the markets.
“For instance, in the past, it cost N1,200 to transport a bag of onions from Kanwa to Kargi, but now the cost has dropped to N250,’’ the chairman said. (
