In a recent interview on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic scholar and retired captain in the Nigerian Army, emphasized the need for the military to be shielded from political interference in order to restore professionalism. Sheikh Gumi, who played a mediatory role during the height of banditry in the North West region, expressed his willingness to continue his efforts if there is a commitment from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.
One of the key issues discussed in the interview was the retirement of high-ranking military generals after every transition in government. Sheikh Gumi criticized this practice, stating that it politicizes the military and compromises its professionalism. He stressed the importance of appointing leaders based on their qualifications, experience, and intelligence, rather than their regional, ethnic, or religious affiliations.
The Islamic scholar pointed out that the politicization of institutions like the military and judiciary has led to their deterioration and made them a laughing stock. He highlighted the contrast with the United States, where former President Barack Obama retained the service chiefs appointed by the previous administration due to the ongoing war in Iraq.
Sheikh Gumi also discussed his previous involvement in addressing the banditry crisis in Nigeria. He highlighted the underlying causes of the conflict, including the farmer-herder clash and the encroachment on grazing reserves. He advocated for a non-kinetic approach to conflict resolution, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and understanding the grievances of the bandits.
However, Sheikh Gumi expressed frustration with the previous government’s response to his efforts. He claimed that the government failed to implement the recommendations put forth during the dialogue and instead resorted to military force without considering the holistic approach he advocated for.
Looking ahead, Sheikh Gumi expressed hope that the new administration under President Tinubu would learn from past mistakes and prioritize coordination among security agencies. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach involving emirs, religious scholars, the military, and the bandits themselves to effectively address the security challenges facing Nigeria.
Regarding the detention of Tukur Mamu, Sheikh Gumi’s former spokesperson, he stated that the case is currently in court and declined to comment further. He denied allegations of Mamu’s involvement in illicit activities, emphasizing his compassion and dedication to helping the poor and needy.
Sheikh Gumi stressed the importance of depoliticizing the military and judiciary to restore professionalism and address the security challenges in Nigeria. He expressed his willingness to continue his efforts if called upon by the new government, provided the approach is holistic and inclusive.
