A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, sentenced a 37-year-old man, Sanni Muritala, to three years in prison for obtaining 20 rams, worth N1.3 million, by false pretences.
The Magistrate, Mrs Sadiq Bello, sentenced Muritala after he had pleaded guilty to a two-court charge of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.
Bello, who gave the convict no option of fine, ordered that he be sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the convict had initially been arraigned on July 22, 2021.
Muritala, who resides at Ijora Eleran area of Lagos, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, had earlier told the court that Muritala committed the offences sometime in December 2019 at Eric Moore Extension, Surulere, Lagos.
He submitted that Muritala fraudulently obtained 20 rams, valued at N1.3 million, from one Yahuza Mohammed, under the pretext of paying back after delivering the said rams to a customer.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 280(a) and 315(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
