The Chairman of Taraba State Council of Traditional rulers, Ishaku Adda, said the Supreme Court ruling on Local Government Autonomy will save the traditional institution in Nigeria from being oppressed by Local Government Council Chairmen
Mr Adda who is the Aku Uka, the paramount ruler of the Jukun kingdom, noted that monarchs in the state were being reduced to nothing before the coming of the present administration.
The monarch said this on Tuesday, at his palace in Wukari when the state committee on the implementation of Local Government Autonomy visited the southern zone on a sensitization exercise to traditional rulers in the zone.
He said the judgement was timely and will save the traditional institution from being oppressed.
He commended Governor Agbu Kefas for the setting up the committee in which he promised that the traditional institution will contribute positive input to their success.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Abel Diah, told the monarchs that the visit is to get their input on how the autonomy will work for the betterment of the state’s residents.
He acknowledged the noble role of traditional rulers in their various communities which he said has been helping in curtailing all forms of security challenges.
He said the contribution of the traditional institution will help the committee’s recommendation to the Governor.
“Let me assure you, our Royal Fathers, that your role and position within the fabric of our society remain as vital and revered as ever. The autonomy granted to the local governments does not in any way diminish the significance of your traditional authority and the deep- rooted connection you hold with your respective communities.
“It is our firm belief that the local government’s autonomy will serve to strengthen and empower our traditional institutions, allowing you to play an even more pivotal role in the development and well-being of your people.
“As the custodians of our rich cultural heritage, the guardians of our time-honoured traditions, and the trusted advisors to our communities, your guidance and involvement will be indispensable in this new era of local governance.
“We envisage a future where the local government administrations work in close collaboration with the traditional rulers, drawing upon your unparalleled knowledge of the local context, your deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of your people, and your unwavering commitment to the well-being of your communities.
“Your role as the interface between the government and the grassroots will be amplified, ensuring that the policies, programs, and decisions made at the local level are truly reflective of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by each community.” Mr Diah
