The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in Kebbi, has congratulated the wife of Gov. Atiku Bagudu, and founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, on her re-election as Director, Union of International Cancer Control (UICC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dr Shinkafi-Bagudu was re-elected into the Board of Directors and President-Elect (BPE) of the UICC on Tuesday, October 6.
NAN also reports that Dr Shinkafi-Bagudu was first elected into the BPE at the UICC at the General Assembly in 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and she is the first female African to be elected to the board.
While congratulating her in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, the NUJ state Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Jajirma, described the feat as a confirmation of her commitment to the fight against cancer through sensitization and awareness creation.
“This is also in addition to the free screening and treatment which hundreds of less-privileged women benefitted within Kebbi State and Nigeria at large,” he said.
Jajirma added that the re-election also signified her impact on the board, which earned her the confidence of the international community who re-elected her for the second term.
“The council, therefore, congratulates Kebbi State and Nigeria as whole, for having this illustrious philanthropist, who remained resolute in making the country proud and assures her of continued support and cooperation,” the chairman said.
The UICC, previously named the International Union Against Cancer, is a non-governmental organization that helps the global health community accelerate the fight against cancer.
Founded in 1933 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, UICC has a membership of over 800 organisations across 155 countries, and features the world’s major cancer societies, ministries of health, research institutes and patient groups.
