The Katsina State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has registered over 6,000 new members in just one month, marking a major boost for the party as political realignments continue across the state.
Announcing the development in Katsina, the state SDP Chairman, Alhaji Bello Adamu-Safana, told journalists that the party’s growing popularity has also attracted the attention of prominent figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), many of whom are finalizing plans to defect to the SDP.
“We will soon receive some chieftains of the ruling APC and major opposition PDP into SDP. The Groups and individuals are coming to our party from these two parties and other platforms,” Adamu-Safana said.
The chairman described the mass registration as a clear sign that citizens are looking for an alternative political platform that reflects their aspirations, particularly at the grassroots level.
Amid the surge in interest, Adamu-Safana issued a strong warning to individuals and groups forming parallel structures under the SDP name without official backing. He stressed that such actions are illegal and could lead to legal consequences.
“We want to caution some individuals and groups that keep on forming structures in the state in the name of SDP.
“This is very wrong. It is not coming from the party unless you are a party member, and the party allows you to form a structure,” he stated.
“It is illegal, null and void… and the extent of the law can be used to prosecute whoever does that,” he said.
The chairman added that while the party is currently issuing temporary membership cards, permanent ones will be made available to eligible members within the next 14 days.
