By Joe Goddy, Katsina
The Katsina State recorded a mortality rate of less than 1 per cent in its N5.7billion goat distribution programme, despite initial concerns that losses could reach up to 10%, according to Yusuf Sulaiman, Special Adviser to the Governor on Livestock and Grazing Reserves.
Speaking at a press briefing, Sulaiman addressed public scrutiny over the programme’s expenditure, clarifying that the funds were not solely for purchasing goats.
He emphasized that the allocation covered various components, including beneficiary training, livestock feed, essential facilities, quarantine centers, and other critical infrastructure.
According to him, the spending goes beyond goat procurement it encompasses the entire framework of the programme, aimed at strengthening livestock farming and expanding economic opportunities for beneficiaries.
The initiative, which involves distributing 40,000 goats to farmers, is part of the state government’s broader efforts to enhance livestock farming, improve food security, and empower local farmers.
Sulaiman reassured the public that proactive measures had been implemented to minimize losses and ensure the programme’s long-term success.
