A total of 209 lives were lost in the October 14 tanker explosion in Majiya, Jigawa State, according to the report of findings of the investigation committee presented to Governor Umar Namadi.
The committee, led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hafizu Muhammad Inuwa, revealed this during a presentation of their detailed report.
DIG Inuwa stated that several factors contributed to the tragic incident, including damaged speed bumps, potholes near the scene, night driving, and excessive speed.
The report noted that the fire was likely ignited by friction between metallic containers and hard surfaces as victims attempted to scoop spilled fuel.
The committee, comprising government officials, security representatives, civil society organizations, and community leaders, aimed to identify the causes of the fire, assess the damage, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
“We are saddened to report that 209 lives were lost in the inferno. Currently, 38 individuals remain hospitalized, while 61 have been discharged. The disaster affected 167 families and destroyed properties worth millions of naira,” DIG Inuwa said.
During the investigation, the committee engaged with key stakeholders, visited health facilities, and consulted affected communities to gather insights.
Governor Namadi commended the committee for their thorough and timely work, assuring them that the government would review the report and swiftly implement its recommendations.
“The government remains committed to taking decisive action to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Namadi stated.
The community now awaits the government’s response and the implementation of the safety measures proposed in the report to avert similar disasters.
