It takes journalists to dispel societal darkness – Unical Alumni President
By Uket Oka, Calabar
The National President of University of Calabar (Unical) Alumni Association, Mr Paul Eshiemomoh, has asserted that it takes journalists to shine the light and dispel darkness in any society.
Eshiemomoh made the assertion when he led a delegation of the Alumni Association to pay a courtesy visit on the Chairman of the Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Archibong Bassey, at the Earnest Bassey Press Centre, Calabar.
The president who said the visit was also to seek a synergy between the NUJ and Uncial Alumni to promote the UniCal brand, noted that, it is fool-hardy for any society to work in isolation of the press as it simply meant that such organisation has chosen darkness over light.
Commenting on the forthcoming 50th anniversary of Uncial in 2025, Eshiemomoh said, “the institution was like a golden hen that produced golden eggs which in turn provided many of the golden chicks enjoyed in the society.
“We are about to set up a Diaspora group of Uncial alumni and we already got a list of 25 alumni in three continents of the world in two days.
“This is to tell you that Uncial may be small in Calabar, but its name as evidence in the certificate of different people in different parts of the world is a global brand.
“NUJ has a very important role to play in projecting the Uncial brand because we do not want to remain in darkness, we want to celebrate our alma mata at 50 and we cannot do it without the world knowing,” he said.
Responding, the state Chairman of NUJ and an alumnus of Unical, Comrade Archibong Bassey, thanked the alumni for honouring her.
Bassey noted that as a graduate of Uncial, she was shaped into a thorough bred professional and had always been passionate about her alma mata.
She said the visit was a call to service, adding that the union would continue to partner with the association to continue to promote the Uncial brand.
The NUJ Chairman, however appealed to the association to carry the union along with its programmes to enable it effectively plan towards playing its role.
DAYLIGHT REPORTERS reports that the alumni association also used the visit to honour the Chairman of the Cross River Council of the NUJ and first female Chairman of the union in the South-South region, Comrade Archibong Bassey.
