The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), has promised to offer a cost-free oversight function of monitoring and supervision of government projects in partnership with key line Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The new Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Calabar Chapter, Engr Obeten Nicholas Otu, made the pledge in his inaugural speech during his investiture as the 5th Chairman.
Engr Otu said the initiative is not only a motion, but a testament to NICE’s dedication to supporting the State Governor, Prince Governor Bassey Otu’s ‘Season of Sweetness’ in the State.
He expressed optimism that by sharing its expertise and time, the association can contribute to responsible development of buildings and infrastructure that stand the test of time and serves the public good.
The chairman assured that NICE would undertake the responsibility with diligence, recognising that advancing resilience requires more than just compliance but also innovation, accountability, learning and constant engagements.
“Our watchful eyes and expert insight can help mitigate risks and ensure that every project undertaken in Cross River State and Nigeria at large is a step towards a safer future,” the Chairman said.
Otu further called on critical stakeholders including government officials, regulatory bodies, community leaders, building and construction firms as well as engineers to join hands in fostering an environment where safety and professionalism are prioritized above all other things.
He also noted that it is only when all the stakeholders agree to work together that they can establish benchmarks, share best practices and create a culture that values transparency and diligence in every aspect of building and construction.
The immediate past chairman of the Institution, Engr Bassey Arikpo, thanked the executive and members for supporting his administration and steadfast dedication to promoting Civil Engineering in Nigeria.
