The National Association of North Central Students (NANCS), has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts in tackling the spate of banditry, kidnappings, and other forms of insecurity in the country.
The National President of NANCS, Mr Muhammed Abubakar made the call shortly after he emerged leader of the association on Monday in Keffi.
Abubakar, a student of the Federal University Dutse, who decried the spate of banditry and kidnappings in the country called for concerted efforts to reduce crimes across the country, especially in the northern region.
The president also expressed deep concern over the ongoing killings in southern Kaduna and other states in the North Central zone, adding that the situation had assumed an alarming rate and was gradually turning the region into a theatre of war.
“As students, we are worried by the spate of insecurity, particularly in the northern part of the country.
“Attacks and counter attacks, banditry, kidnapping, which has led to loss of lives and property worth billions is becoming the order of the day.
“So, we are calling on government at all levels to step up efforts to nib such criminal activities in the bud to ensure that peace and security is guaranteed in the region.’’
Abubakar, who emerged president at the annual convention of the association, promised to lead the students in the right direction.
He also pledged to prioritise the welfare of members of the association as well as promote peaceful co-existence among students in the region.
The president of the association also called on the Federal Government to declare state of emergency in the education sector.
Abubakar also urged Nasarawa state government to allocate 26 per cent of its budget to education as recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Other officials elected alongside Abubakar include Dooshima Aku of the Benue State University, Deputy National President, Aminu Onipe of University of Abuja, National Secretary, and Ogwuche Oche of University of Jos, Publicity Secretary.
Others are Suleiman Anglo of University of Abuja, Financial Secretary, and Banji Gbotemi of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi as Assistant Secretary-General among others.
