Sen. Umaru Al-Makura (APC-Nasarawa South), has urged Nigerians to deep-reflect on the journey so far and commit to unity as the country marks its 62nd Independence day anniversary.
Al-Makura made the call while baring his mind to newsmen on Nigeria at 62 and Nasarawa State at 26, on Saturday in Lafia.
He said that the occasion called for Nigerians to emphasise their unity and harmony above any other consideration, more so as the 2023 general elections drew near.
“At this auspicious period, we as Nigerians must come together to emphasise our unity, our harmony and vision as a people,” he said.
The former governor of Nasarawa State charged Nigerians to collectively work towards having credible general elections in 2023.
He noted that with the new electoral act and the technological innovations introduced into the electoral process, Nigeria was about to witness a new dawn in its elections.
Al-Makura maintained that the electoral act had clearly spelt out the rules of the game for politicians and other stakeholders.
” I believe if we take the challenge and abide by the act, we are going to showcase our commitment towards democratic tenets,” he said.
He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the judiciary to all leave up to their expectations in order to ensure credible polls in 2023.
Al-Makura congratulated Nigerians and citizens of Nasarawa State on the anniversary and expressed optimism of greatness ahead for the nation.
