Former Governor of Gombe State and Senator representing Gombe Central Senatorial District, Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje has advised young doctors to honour their calling as Medical Doctors and be the agents of good change as the health and lives of Nigerians are in their hands.
Sen. Goje spoke in Gombe during the induction of 29 pioneer graduands of Medical and Pharmaceutical College of the Gombe State University (GSU) into the medical profession.
Goje who was the special guest of honour at the event, said he was excited with the development and he appreciated the Management and staff of the Institution for their commitment to upholding enviable standards in the Institution, which has in turn, brought discernible progress being witnessed currently in the university.
“Today is a special day for me, not only me for me but also for all of us, particularly His Excellency the Governor, who was my Commissioner of Finance when I established this university.
“I can recall when we are trying to establish this university, many people were not in support of the idea because they thought that there was no enough money to run the university. People were asking me where will we get the money to build an international airport, carryout water project and establish a university at the same time? It was a very big challenge but my total reliance was on God and I felt a high sense of commitment and with the support of my team ‐ my SSG, Chief of Staff and other council members, and particularly the late Emir of Gombe Alhaji Shehu Usman Abubakar, we were able to not only establish the university, but also turn Gombe from a big village to a model city.
“I am very much happy that with that effort, we are able to produce a set of world class Doctors and Pharmacists.” He said.
While addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor, Aliyu Usman Elnafaty, expressed his gratitude for yet another historic occasion of the call to medical profession of the pioneer set of Doctors.
He informed the gathering that Medical programme of the University was designed and adequately equipped to produce sound graduates that can compete with those from any part of the world in the practice of medicine within and outside the shores of Nigeria, stressing that this was evident in the cheering news on the feedback being received all over the country on the university’s products.
He added that the graduating doctors had been exposed to the required training and were found worthy in both character and learning in the profession.
Goje established the Gombe state University in 2004 during his first tenure as the second civilian governor of the state.
