Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme for positively influencing the attitude of Nigerians.
Governor Sani said the scheme has contributed immensely to the development of rural communities.
He said this at the opening/swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 batch ‘B’ stream ‘2’ orientation course for corps members on Friday in Kaduna.
Governor Sani also noted that the scheme has been designed as a platform for ensuring even spread and mobility of skilled manpower through the deployment of graduates to serve in states other than theirs, thus contributing in reshaping the attitude of Nigerians.
Represented by the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, he said “The pivotal role of the NYSC scheme in our quest for national integration and sustainable development is attested to by the noteworthy contributions of corps members to community development and the implementation of many Government programmes and projects.
“For instance, the people of this country will always be appreciative of the noble role of corps members in the evolution of a credible electoral process, the fight against illiteracy, primary health care delivery, infrastructural development, among others.”
Governor Sani, therefore, urged the corps members to be firm in upholding the oath of allegiance they took to motivate them in conducting themselves creditably at all times.
He said, “The corps members are not only ambassadors of the NYSC, but also representatives of all Nigerian youths.”
He assured the corps members of the State Government’s commitment always to create the enabling environment for them to maximise their potentials.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC in Kaduna, Hassan Taura, said 1,347 corps members, comprising 663 males and 684 females were registered for the orientation course.
He noted that during the three-week orientation course, they are expected to take part in all camp activities, such as military drills, citizenship and leadership training, sports, social events and other forms of training that would help in preparing them for the task ahead.
Mr Taura urged the corps members to be disciplined and always adhere to the rules and regulations of the scheme.
He thanked the Kaduna State Government and other stakeholders for their support to the scheme.
