The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, hosted a reception in honour of Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the newly elected National President of the NUJ.
This milestone marks the first time a son of Gombe and the northeast region has risen to lead the union as the national president.
Speaking at the event held at White Hill Hotel, the chairman of the NUJ Gombe State Council, Faruk Mu’azu, welcomed guests to the reception, praising Alhassan’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to the journalism profession.
Muazu emphasised the crucial role journalists play in shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and telling important stories.
He acknowledged the support of Gombe State governor, Inuwa Yahaya, in promoting journalism and free speech in the state.
The chairman specifically lauded the governor’s efforts in digitising the Gombe Media Corporation (GMC) and supporting the NUJ’s trip to Owerri for national convention.
However, Muazu humbly requested the governor’s intervention in completing the long-abandoned NUJ secretariat in Gombe.
In his remarks, NUJ National President, Yahya, expressed his gratitude to the union for celebrating him and promised his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare, security and protection of Nigerian journalists.
