By Najib Sani, Gombe
The recent appointment of judicial officers in Gombe State has sparked concern over gender disparity in the judiciary.
A female lawyer in Gombe State and legal director of the Gombe State Association of NGOS, Barrister Martha Daniel, made the observation in a conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday.
She particularly observed that Gombe State judiciary has sworn in judges recently in the state to bridge man power gap complaining however that of the five magistrate judges and 46 area court judges inaugurated, there was not a single woman appointed as an area court judge.
While emphasising the need for greater representation of women in leadership positions, she called on women, particularly those within the justice system to rise up and take on leadership roles to bridge the gender gap in the justice administration in the state.
“Gombe State government sworn in five magistrate Judges and 46 Judges. Of the 46 area court judges there was no single woman. While I appreciate the efforts of the Chief Judge of Gombe State my Lord Justice Halima, it is important that we don’t religate women to the background and women don’t also religate themselves to the background.
“I am calling on all women particularly those within the Justice System to be more rise up to the occasion in order to breach the gender gap in the Justice administration in Gombe State,” she advised.
