Farmers in Gombe State are reaping the rewards of modern farming techniques introduced by the Sasakawa Africa Association, a programme aimed at improving agricultural productivity and livelihoods.
A recent visit to rural communities, including Popandital and Yateren, by Sasakawa officials, state agricultural representatives, and journalists highlighted the impact of the initiative.
The visit aimed to assess how the programme’s support—ranging from training in regenerative and market-oriented agriculture to the provision of improved inputs—has transformed farming practices and boosted harvests.
Farmers expressed excitement over their improved yields, with one beneficiary, Ignatius Alhaji, reporting how proper ridging and seed spacing techniques helped him harvest over six bags of maize and soya beans from just 20 ridges.
Others shared stories of financial gains, better nutrition for their families, and improved lifestyles, including the ability to invest in new assets.
The initiative has also encouraged the formation of cooperative groups, particularly among women, fostering collaboration and economic growth.
Highlights of the visit included display of variety of food displays and a meal prepared from the farmers’ produce, underscoring the success of the programme in enhancing food security and livelihoods.
